Voucher system bad idea for Medicare

Editor, The Commercial:

Congress is considering turning our present Medicare service into a voucher system. This could affect 565,000 Arkansans who are currently on Medicare and also 575,000 workers in Arkansas who are currently paying into Medicare and will enter the program in the next 15 years.

This is unfair to those who have paid into the program their entire lives. We have a decent Medicare program in place which was started in 1965. It actually pays 80% of our medical care. This is beneficial for many seniors and also helps the physicians and local hospitals provide affordable, accessible health care.

President Trump expressed his views during his campaign, stating, “I am going to protect and save your Social Security and your Medicare. You made a deal a long time ago.”

Now we are counting on Congress to stand by President Trump’s promise to oppose voucher proposals and find another way to make necessary changes to Medicare. Thank You.
