The Simon Bradford Chapter of United States Daughters of 1812 has a long history of locating and marking the graves of veterans of the War of 1812, including those who gave civil service from 1784 to 1815.

Kimberley Purifoy Stout, chapter registrar, state vice-president and state registrar, has researched and located several grave sites.

Stout and her husband, Kimber Stout, recently took an adventure drive to Bluff City, Nevada County, Ark., to the Gulley Cemetery, according to a news release.

“John Gulley is my third great grandfather,” she said.

Gulley was born March 4, 1788, in Duplin Co., N.C. He was the youngest son of William Gulley and Bethany Hinnant. He married Nancy Bizzell on Feb. 13, 1809. They lived on a family plantation in Duplin Co., N.C., and were the parents of 14 children. Descendants lived in North Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and elsewhere, according to the release.

The Stouts placed a memorial stake at his grave site identifying him as a patriot of the war of 1812 and dedicated his grave with a short ceremony.

During the period of 1991 to 2000, Louise Doak, then-chapter president, located and marked many graves and has been followed since, according to a news release.

Founded in 1892 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 is a non-profit, non-political, women’s service organization for descendants of American patriots who rendered civil, military or naval service to the country during the years of 1784 to 1815.

The Simon Bradford Chapter was organized in 1911 in Pine Bluff and meets the third Wednesday of February, May, August and October at the Pine Bluff Country Club along with the State Society Daughters of Colonial Wars and the John Eliot Chapter Colonial Dames of the 17th Century.
