Friends of John H. Johnson Museum and the American Red Cross of Greater Arkansas made a presentation April 23 in observance of the 97th anniversary of the 1927 Flood.

The observance was held at Reed Elementary School in Dumas and Cornerstone Christian Academy in Tillar, according to a news release.

Friends of John H. Johnson Museum, curators of the life and legacy of John H. Johnson, founder of Johnson Publishing Co., distributed their children’s book, “Johnny Was His Name: The Boy Who Grew Up To Become John H. Johnson.”

“Johnny Was His Name” shares the story of a 9-year-old Johnson as he lived with his mother and Arkansas City residents on top of the Arkansas City Levee for six weeks during the 1927 Flood.

Jameriah Eni, disaster program specialist for the Red Cross, gave students a lesson on how to prepare for a flood, tips on helping to keep their family flood aware and safe, and discussed flood preparedness.

Each student and their teachers received the book “Johnny Was His Name,” and art supplies with more than 200 books donated to Reed Elementary School and 30 books donated to Cornerstone Christian Academy. Funding for the art supplies and books was made possible in part with a grant from the Arkansas Arts Council.
