Man claims he bought stolen car at dice game

A Pine Bluff man who was found in a car that had been reported stolen in June allegedly told police he had purchased the car at a dice game and didn’t know it was stolen.

Jarius Wayman, 25, who is currently on probation, also allegedly said that receipts with his name on them that were found in the car came from pawn shops so he could get money to gamble with.

According to a probable cause affidavit from Pine Bluff Police Department Detective Kaylon McDaniel, police had chased the car, a 2012 gray Dodge, on Nov. 15 after they saw it traveling west on 13th Avenue while occupied by three males. Officers terminated the pursuit and lost sight of the car.

On Wednesday, the car was located in the 2100 block of East 10th Avenue and occupied by Wyman and a female. Police reported detecting an odor of marijuana coming from it. A key fob for the car was found in Wayman’s pocket and a number of receipts inside the vehicle.

When he was questioned, Wayman allegedly said he had paid $8,000 for the car.

Because Wayman is currently on probation, Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $10,000 cash only bond after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with theft by receiving.

The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Wayman.
