A Pine Bluff man was arrested Thursday after police located a car the man had allegedly stolen earlier in the day.
When he was located inside a house on the east said of the city, Victor Baker, 24, allegedly told police he thought he would have been captured earlier, Pine Bluff Police Department Detective Keith Banks said in a probable cause affidavit presented in district court Friday.
According to the affidavit, a woman told police she had gone to the Big Red at 3309 S. Olive St. at about 2:05 p.m. to wash her boyfriend’s car. She went inside the store to see if the car wash was working.
When she came back out, the car was gone from one of the wash bays, and police learned that it had been purchased at Car Mart, so they went there to see if there was a GPS system.
Banks reported that Car Mart provided police with a location where they found the car, and after going to the door of the house, were able to locate Baker.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Security video from the business showed that Baker was the only person to enter the car wash bay during the time the car was taken, and when he was interviewed, Baker allegedly said he had been walking down Olive Street and got tired of walking. He said he saw the car was running and took it, then used the car to try and find a job.
Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $10,000 bond for Baker after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with theft of property.
The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Baker.
