Dempsey becomes editor, publisher of Jefferson County Historical Quarterly

The Jefferson County Historical Society has a new editor.

Joe Dempsey, founder of the Joe Dempsey Communications Co., has assumed the duties of editor and publisher of the quarterly.

David Trulock informed the society’s board that he was retiring as editor and publisher of the Jefferson County Historical Quarterly after serving 20 years on the editorial staff. President Lela R. Murray thanked him for his dedication and service. Trulock will continue assisting the editorial staff.

The transaction took place at a board meeting on July 13 at Lakeside United Methodist Church Center.

The meeting was called to order by Murray, who announced that two board members’ terms had expired, and asked the nominating committee for their report. Sue Merritt, current treasurer, and Sue Trulock, secretary, were nominated to serve another three-year term. There were no nominations from the floor and Sharon Wyatt made a motion to accept these nominations by acclamation. The motion was seconded by Joannye Crab.

Wyatt, publicity chairman, was asked to give a report on the newsletter. She explained that the newsletter is sent by email to anyone who wishes to receive it and provides their email address. It is sent twice a year before the semi-annual meetings in January and July.

Murray adjourned the meeting and introduced the speaker, Kathleen Majewska.

Majewska, a well-known expert on the Saenger Theatre, presented a program on the history of the old theater, which included a film, produced by the Discovery Channel, about the theater in its early days. She was assisted by her son, Tristan Pearl.
