A senior Watson Chapel track athlete is headed to college.
Chryshawn Savage signed with West Virginia State on Wednesday in the Leslie Byrd Henderson Gymnasium at Watson Chapel.
He competes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes for the Wildcat track and field team, as well as the 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter relays. Savage, who has also competed in the AAU Junior Olympics, has a personal record of 11.10 seconds for the 100-meter dash and 22.76 seconds for the 200-meter.
“He’s one of the most hard working and dedicated kids I’ve ever been around,” Watson Chapel track coach Johnathan Strickland said. “I am beyond proud of this great accomplishment, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.”
WVSU is a Historically Black University in Institute, West Virginia, an unincorporated community near the city of Dunbar. Its athletic programs compete in NCAA Division II and the Mountain East Conference.
The Yellow Jackets reinstated track and field, along with cross country, this season. In the men’s program’s first iteration, WVSU won 11 conference championships in the former West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, including winning five-straight from 1969-73 and again from 1981-85.
WVSU finished eighth out of nine teams in its MEC indoor championship debut in February and is now competing in its debut outdoor season.
