The Willing Workers of White Hall Extension Homemakers’ Club learned about sun safety, gave updates and heard reports during the June meeting at the White Hall Library.

Vice President Dee Kindrick welcomed everyone and asked Jim Wilson to bless the food. Members had a potluck salad meal, according to a news release.

Kindrick presided over the meeting in the absence of President Karen Needler due to medical reasons.

The Thought of the Month was read by Tonia Dalby: “If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sun beams and you will always look lovely.”

Kindrick led the members in the Homemaker’s Creed. Elizabeth Wall read the Handy Hint: “Remember to SLIP – SLOP – SLAP before you go out. Slip on a shirt. Slop on sunscreen. Slap on a hat.”

Jim Wilson read the Inspiration from Song of Solomon 4:7. Jo Ann Carr, secretary, called the roll with members answering the question: “Do you use sunscreen when outside in the sun?” Ten members were present.

Sarah Payton presented the program on Fashion in the Sun. Payton said to stay out of the sun to avoid harmful UV rays. Too much sun is a surefire fast track toward wrinkles, blotchy skin, liver/age spots and leathery texture.

You also increase your risk for skin cancer. Apply sunscreen generously, wear protection clothing and try to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Your lifestyle plays an important role in your skin’s appearance and health, according to the presentation.

Some suggestions: eat a healthy diet; moisturize … inside (drink plenty of water); exercise; wash skin folds more often and remember to get adequate sleep.

Payton also went over the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, pool safety guidelines and different kinds of sunscreen. She had handouts for members.

Kay Cromwell, community service chairman, reported food pantry items for July would be flour, sugar or oil. Seventeen items were collected at the May meeting for the White Hall Food Pantry. At the conclusion of the meeting, items will be collected for the backpack project for Neighbor to Neighbor and delivered later.

Kathy Wilson, continuing education chairman, suggested a trip to Grant County Museum in Sheridan and lunch for July activity. This was scheduled for July 27.

Carr presented Marnette Reed, treasurer, a check received at the Extension Homemaker’s State Meeting for a project book submitted by the club on the Children’s Advocacy Project for last year. A certificate was also presented to Penny Scholes for the club scrapbook.

Upcoming events announced were Christmas in July on July 25 at the Extension Office and county picnic on Aug. 24 at Pursuit Church.

The next meeting of Willing Workers of White Hall EHC will be July 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the White Hall Library.
