UAPB takes fall to Texas Tech

This season’s road woes continued Monday night for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men’s basketball team.

A hot-shooting Texas Tech team defeated UAPB 98-64 at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas.

UAPB (1-5) shot the ball well, making 52.1% of its shots from the field. Junior guard Christian Moore scored a game-high 20 points with 5 assists. Fellow guard Dante Sawyer scored 13 points.

As well as the Golden Lions shot the ball, 23 turnovers limited their opportunities. Texas Tech (4-0) attempted 14 more shots than UAPB and outscored the Lions 30-15 off turnovers and 16-4 in transition.

The Red Raiders also shot a blistering 60% and made 14 of 35 3-pointers.

Tech junior forward Darrion Williams led the Red Raiders with 19 points, followed by guard Kevin Overton with 17. Two Raiders recorded double-doubles: Elijah Hawkins with 10 points and 11 assists, and JT Toppin with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Kerwin Walton opened the scoring with a 3-pointer 49 seconds into the game, and Texas Tech led from there. The Red Raiders built an early 11-2 lead, though UAPB closed the gap to 11-9.

The Golden Lions never got that close again. They had the lead down to 34-26 with 3:26 remaining in the first half, but Texas Tech finished the half on a 13-2 run. The lead was never smaller than 16 points in the second half, with the Red Raiders’ largest lead being 88-46 with 7:15 to play.
