UAPB hires new assistant QB coach

UAPB hires new assistant QB coach
Jonathan Green

A new assistant coach will join the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff just as fall camp begins amid a quarterback battle.

UAPB has hired Jonathan Green as an assistant quarterbacks coach. He announced the move on social media platform X Thursday afternoon. Offensive coordinator Tony Hull welcomed Green to his staff with a post on X soon afterward.

Hull is UAPB’s quarterbacks coach in addition to his coordinator duties, so hiring Green will likely allow Hull to delegate some of those responsibilities, freeing more time to focus more on the entire offense.

Green most recently coached defensive backs at Capital University, a Division III program in Columbus, Ohio. He posted about the school seeking additional defensive players as recently as July 9, signaling how recent his move to UAPB is.

The Grambling State graduate interned with the GSU football program and spent a season as a volunteer recruiter for Georgia Tech before joining the Capital coaching staff in 2024. Green also interned with the Kansas City Chiefs last summer.

He joins the UAPB coaching staff less than a week before the start of fall camp.

The Golden Lions have five quarterbacks competing to replace Mekhi Hagens as the starter ahead of the Aug. 30 season opener at Texas Tech.

Green’s hiring comes after UAPB also hired a new offensive line coach, Donovan Jackson, after Steve Wallace left this summer to become the offensive coordinator at Kentucky State.

Wallace’s departure means defensive coordinator Jeff Burrow is the only remaining assistant from head coach Alonzo Hampton’s initial coaching staff in 2023.

Burrow was promoted to defensive coordinator this offseason in addition to his duties coaching the secondary.
