The Student Nurses Association at the University of Arkansas at Monticello recently donated care packages valued at more than $1,000 to the United States military troops through the Support Our Troops organization.
SNA, consisting of current students in the UAM School of Nursing, provided snacks, personal hygiene products and more, according to a news release.
“SNA’s goal was to enhance the morale and well-being of the deployed troops through items specifically requested by them,” said Ashlynn Baker, president of SNA. “In each box, we also attached handwritten letters thanking troops for their service and sacrifices, along with printed and signed pictures of each of our members. We hoped to have brightened the soldiers’ day.”
UAM’s chapter of SNA completes community service projects each month. Previous projects have included purchasing Thanksgiving hams for families in Monticello; providing nursing education on blood pressure to UAM faculty and students; teaching CPR to students at Star City High School; performing hearing, vision and BMI screenings at Jimmy Brown Elementary School in Star City; preparing boxes for Operation Christmas Child; hosting a flu shot drive; and holding a hygiene product drive for Hope Place in Monticello.
“We’re always looking for new service projects and invite local organizations to reach out to us with ideas,” Baker said.
