Tra Bouscaren, an artist and assistant professor of art at Arizona State University, will participate in the ARTx3 Campus’ artist-in-residence program from June 3-28.
The artist-in-residence program is for working artists and is held in the ART WORKS on Main building, at 627 S. Main St.
“Bouscaren is a post-disciplinary artist focused on spectacle at the crossroads of waste culture and the surveillance state,” according to a news release.
As part of his residency, Bouscaren will create work that reflects his experience engaging with the community of Pine Bluff. He will also conduct events such as artist talks, workshops, and presentations for the community. These programs will accommodate a diverse audience with adults and children. The topics and dates for the programs will be announced in June.
“Post-disciplinary art” is a broad term describing multi-layered and often collaborative approaches to designing artworks. He has exhibited his work in many cities, including Berlin, Madrid, San Francisco, Orlando, Philadelphia, and New York City.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
“We are extremely excited to welcome artist Tra Bouscaren to the ARTx3 campus as the first artist in residency of the 2024 season,” said Kevin Haynie, curator of collections and exhibitions. “Tra brings with him a unique style and technique of confronting many interesting topics in an incredibly thought-provoking and abstract manner. With his experience and expertise in many kinds of materials and technology, we are hoping to share this with our community and help open avenues of art-making that may not always be accessible or easily approachable.”
Bouscaren has presented his practice-based research at MOCA Tucson, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Stony Brook University Conference on Art and Philosophy, Studies in Control Societies Journal, Ildo Lobo Center for Culture in Praia, CAA Conferences in Chicago and Los Angeles, the Rubin Center for Visual Arts and the FLAT Journal.
The artist builds projects with a broad array of visual artists, performers, hackers, musicians, and scholars through the Expanded Media Lab he founded in 2019.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Yale University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in interdisciplinary fine arts from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a doctoral candidate at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
