Costume design, 3-D printing and stop-motion animation are among the hands-on activities planned for TinkerFest at the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S. Main St., from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
The free event will include demonstrations by arts center staff, local artists and faculty and students of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Merchandising, Textiles and Design Program. Sessions will also include “tinkering” stations where youth can get creative with a variety of design media.
At the UAPB Textile Science Studio, participants will learn about the basics of textiles and clothing design. Demonstration topics include mask making, fiber carding, wool spinning, garment draping and fiber identification using a microscope. Members of the UAPB Fashion Network will discuss garment design and display some of their original apparel.
Art center activities include workshops on art, bicycle repair and 3-D printing, as well as a trip to Mindbender Mansion, an exhibit of puzzles, brainteasers and interactive challenges.
“TinkerFest is a unique event that combines the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics with artistic creativity,” Lenore Shoults, executive director for the arts center, said in a news release. “The event is inspired by the ‘maker movement,’ an increasingly popular trend of creating artistic works from any raw material, including discarded electronics and plastics.”

The demonstrations will also provide college students with knowledge of some of the latest trends in art and design, Kaye Crippen, professor of the MTD Department at UAPB, said.
“We always appreciate the opportunity to partner with the ASC to give students experience and introduce them to new concepts that they will find valuable in the future,” she said.
The event is sponsored by the Pine Bluff Community Foundation and the Arkansas Discovery Network, which is funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
