Banks tosses no-hitter in PB Angels’ victory

CAMDEN — Cameron Banks threw a no-hitter, Aaron McDonald went 2 for 2, Adam Graham hit 4 for 4 and the Pine Bluff Angels defeated Camden 9-0 in the Coca-Cola Classic on Saturday.

Pine Bluff also defeated Lonoke 4-3 to advance to today’s championship game against Southwest Arkansas. Game time is 3 p.m.

Pine Bluff Braves hand LR Ashcats first loss

The Pine Bluff Braves remained undefeated after handing the Little Rock Ashcats their first loss of the season with a 6-4 victory on Saturday at Pine Bluff Regional Baseball Park during the 10th annual Juneteenth Celebration.

Pine Bluff (13-0) scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Corey McCoy drove in two runs in the inning, Nathaniel Thompson drove in another and Tyler Massenelli had two RBIs, including the game-winner in the second.

Derrick Hower drove in two runs in the three-run seventh inning for the Ashcats (3-1), but the comeback fell short as Bill Smith pitched the final two innings and threw no-hit ball while striking out two for the Braves.

Chase Smith picked up his first win of the year for Pine Bluff after pitching seven innings and striking out six batters.

With the win, Pine Bluff is five wins away from its best start in franchise history.

Ramirez released by A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. — Manny Ramirez asked for his release from the Oakland Athletics, and it was granted by the organization on Friday.

Ramirez signed a minor league deal with Oakland in the off-season in a comeback attempt after taking a year off. He hit .302 with 14 RBIs in 17 games with Triple-A Sacramento after he served a 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy last year.

Ramirez, 40, was expected to make approximately $500,000 if he was added to Oakland’s major league roster.

‘Pacman’ Jones ordered to pay $11 million for shooting

LAS VEGAS — Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones must pay $11 million in damages, according to a jury, to two Las Vegas strip club employees that were injured in 2007 when a gunman opened fire outside of the club. The gunman said he was ordered to open fire by Jones.

Tommy Urbanski, a club manager, was left paralyzed from the down. Aaron Cudworth is a bouncer who was wounded.

Jones was not in court for the verdict and was re-signed by the Bengals in March. His one-year contract is worth $950,000.

Logano wins fifth Nationwide race

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Joey Logano claimed his fifth win in 11 Nationwide starts this season after the fought off James Buescher for a win at Saturday’s Alliance Truck Parts 250.

After a restart with four laps left, Logano crossed the finish line .208 seconds ahead of Buescher. Kurt Busch came in third and Cole Whitt was fourth.

The race was red-flagged on Lap 119 after Josh Richards and Jamie Dick wrecked in Turn 3.
