Editor’s note: Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr. on Thursday released a statement to The Commercial via email addressing allegations that a Pine Bluff man, Jackie McCoy, was beaten to death while in the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Detention Center. McCoy was released from jail custody on his own recognizance Jan. 2, the day of his death.

Mark Cannon, an activist who lives in White Hall, goes by the Facebook handle Voice Fore Justice, to which Woods refers in the following statement, which is edited for clarity:

As Sheriff, it is my duty to address recent false allegations circulating on social media regarding the conduct of jail staff under my administrative supervision and the tragic passing of Jackie McCoy. Various self-proclaimed community activists, including [Voice Fore Justice] and social media trolls have been spreading misinformation for personal gain, hoping to increase their following and monetize their social media presence. Contrary to these allegations, I ordered McCoy’s return to Jefferson Regional Medical Center (JRMC) after his premature release, addressing serious health concerns. The malicious intent behind these posts aims to defame my character, jail staff, and exploit falsehoods for social media and political gains.

I categorically deny all allegations of misconduct on the part of jail staff. The Arkansas State Medical Examiner has conducted a comprehensive autopsy of Jackie McCoy’s body, which refutes false claims by internet trolls. The preliminary results revealed that McCoy’s death resulted essentially from medical complications related to preexisting health conditions. There is no indication of trauma from a beating or assault, as falsely claimed by social media sources.

The unfounded posts have fueled sensationalism and dramatization by individuals attempting to spread baseless allegations.

Jackie McCoy was received and accepted by the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center on July 16, 2023, from the Pine Bluff Police Department on a criminal charge of aggravated robbery. Despite being issued a $10,000 secure bond, McCoy failed to post bond for his release. Throughout his time in detention, McCoy’s mental health issues were well noted by jail staff and the courts.

It is regrettable that false information is being disseminated to exploit a tragic event for personal gain. The jail staff has conducted themselves professionally, and the well-being of detainees is of utmost importance. We remain committed to transparency and accountability in all our actions.

The filing of multiple lawsuits for libel and defamation of character against [Voice Fore Justice] and Jihad Muhammad are imminent, as well as other followers involved [not yet named] in spreading false information. These legal actions aim to restore truth, protect the reputation of law enforcement, and ensure accountability for those who exploit tragedy for personal gain.

I urge the public to rely on accurate information and refrain from spreading baseless allegations that only serve to hinder the pursuit of justice and compromise the reputation of our dedicated law enforcement personnel.
