Five Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies have been promoted this month, Sheriff Lafayette Woods Jr. announced.

The promotions are Lt. Kashonda Thompkins to major; Sgt. Terry Wingard to lieutenant; and investigators Dennis Kendall, Sandra Harper and Michael Musgrove to sergeant.

According to a news release, their promotions are a direct result of their hard work and dedication to the sheriff’s office and the citizens of Jefferson County.

“Today’s promotions are not just a reflection of your individual capabilities but also a testament to their dedication, hard work, and leadership qualities,” Woods said. “These members of our staff have consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in your duties, showing a deep understanding of the JCSO’s core values and a passion for ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. As they step into their new roles, I am confident that they will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and service.”

Leadership isn’t just about giving orders, Woods said, but also about inspiring others, fostering teamwork and leading by example. The reminder, according to Woods, underscores a quote from retired Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Schroeder, who said, “Leadership is a responsibility to do more, not an excuse to do less.”

“The journey of those promoted today to their respective positions has prepared them well, and I have no doubt that they will excel in guiding the personnel under their command towards success,” Woods said. “We all offer our support and collaboration as these members of our staff take on their new responsibilities. Together, we will continue to strengthen our commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.

“Congratulations to all of our of newly promoted employees and may their leadership journey be filled with success, growth, and positive impact.”
