Sheridan advances in zones

TEXARKANA — Sheridan advanced to the semifinals of the winner’s bracket with a 4-3 win over Bryant Saturday afternoon in the Senior Legion zone tournament in Texarkana.

The Jackets opened the tournament with a 15-1 mercy-rule win against Little Rock Continental Express on Friday and will play Texarkana today at 4 p.m. A win would catapult Sheridan into the event finals and a guaranteed spot in next weeks state tournament at Burns Park in North Little Rock.

Against Bryant, Sheridan scored a run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to complete a come-from-behind win. Jake Crenshaw led off the inning with a single to left field and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Ware. Crenshaw scored two batters later when Jake Smith rattled a ground ball off the second baseman’s glove and the ball bounced far enough away to allow Crenshaw to score the game winner.

The Jackets were down 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth and knotted the score when Perkins and Grady Finley singled, advanced to second and third on a passed ball and Josh Miller chased Perkins home with a sacrifice fly to center.

Landon Huggins picked up the win, pitching the final four innings, surrendering four hits and a run. He entered in relief of starter Luke Nanneman. Nanneman went five strong innings, allowing two runs on two hits. He also aided his own cause with a two-RBI single in the second.

Finley went 3 for 4 with a stolen base and Ware singled and doubled.

Against Little Rock, Crenshaw recorded the win. He went four innings and gave up one run on three hits. Ryan Taylor finished the final three and gave up three hits.

Perkins drove in four runs on a 3-for-5 performance while Miller, Ware, Crenshaw and Alec Pender collected two hits each.

Miller’s night was highlighted by a solo home run in his first game back from football workouts at Henderson State.
