Pine Bluff Community Band to present annual spring concert

The Pine Bluff Community Band will present its annual Spring Appreciation Concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Great Hall of First Methodist Church, 200 W. Sixth Ave.

“If you enjoy dance music of the Big Band era as well as the 50’s, you will really like this concert,” said Jerry Williams, director of the Community Band.

Featured favorites will include “One O’Clock Jump” and a Glenn Miller tune entitled, “String Of Pearls.” The Big Band sound of Duke Ellington is also included in this concert with a medley of his dance tunes.

“Baby, It’s Cold Outside” features alto sax player Al Wimberly, Watson Chapel High School director of bands, and tenor sax player, Mike Hood.

“Bugler’s Holiday,” a concert crowd pleaser, spotlights a very talented trumpet trio, Richard Bailey, Garry Henson and Keith Grimes.

“We have the best trumpet section of any of the community bands in the state of Arkansas,” said Lewis Hinkle, band president. “Dr. Bailey has his doctorate degree in trumpet performance, Garry Henson has played professionally with bands in the Washington D.C. area; and the other guys carry the section quite well.”

The contemporary segment of the concert highlights the popular theme from the movie “Captain America;” and medleys “Legends of Rock” and selections from the musical, “Chicago.” A tribute to the late W. Francis McBeth, internationally known composer and conductor from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, will be featured with his composition, “Grace Praeludium” taken from the hymn tune “Amazing Grace.”

The concert is free and open to the public.
