OPINION | LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Pine Bluff or Pittsburgh

Mike Lankford

Struggling cities

Editor, The Commercial:

Do you know what Pine Bluff and Pittsburgh, Pa., have in common? Well, it’s a stagnant economy, with a dwindling population. Really? Who would have thunk it?

And before we recommend renaming streets or converting streets to one-ways to turn Pine Bluff’s economic conditions around, Pittsburgh has had a rapid transit highway named in Dr. King’s honor since 1984.

So we might go back to the drawing board to come up with another answer for stabilizing Pine Bluff’s economy. Oh, and yes, Pittsburgh has also done the go-kart thing. Speaking of throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars down the drain! Come on man!!

Through time, we have learned — never be satisfied with our achievements, and strive to be judged by the content of our character. Our challenge as a struggling city is to unite as one, getting over the bickering and childishness of needing control while at the risk of all of our assets devaluing to $0.

When will our governing body restore to a sense of duty and dignity? And one last question, what company wants to grow or come to a city that hates itself?

Well … who is your bet on — Pine Bluff or Pittsburgh’s leadership?

Mike Lankford,

Pine Bluff
