Newby attends national conference

Derrick L. Newby Sr., president of the Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Inc., will attend the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s 27th annual National Leadership Forum.

Held at Washington, D.C., the event began Feb. 6 and will continue through Thursday, Feb. 9. Newby was scheduled to meet with U.S. representatives and senators at the forum’s Capitol Hill Day event Wednesday, Feb. 8.

CADCA’s National Leadership Forum, is the nation’s largest training event for community prevention leaders, treatment professionals and researchers. The event was expected to host approximately 3,000 substance abuse prevention specialists and advocates from throughout the country.

“We are so excited to be able to spend several days with other similar organizations from across the country, learning and honing our prevention skills so our community can be a better place, one that doesn’t suffer from the harms of drug and alcohol abuse,” Newby said in a news release. “I plan to come back re-energized with new strategies to tackle drug use in Arkansas.”

The mission of PBICVR is to improve the quality of life for all citizens with special concerns for young people.

“The PBICVR recently impacted the community mobilizing three school districts’ seven and eight graders in a b.u.s. (building unbalanced systems) boycott of violence, fighting and weapons,” the release said. “The organization continues its anti-bullying, drug prevention and conflict resolution initiatives.”
