Married couple arrested after allegedly threatening each other

A married couple was arrested Wednesday after two separate incidents involving each other.

Sonia Barnes, 45, allegedly pointed a gun at her husband, Gregory Charles, 52, while Charles allegedly threatened Barnes with a knife.

During court hearings for the two Friday, Deputy Prosecutor Jill Reed said police were sent at 9 a.m. Wednesday to a house in the 3900 block of Robin Hood Lane, where Charles said he had received a phone call from Barnes saying that she was going to shoot him when he got home.

Detective Jeremy Oswalt said in a probable cause affidavit that Charles told police when he got home, Barnes met him at the door and pointed a gun at him. According to the affidavit, Barnes was not there when police arrived and no gun was found during a search.

Later Wednesday, police were sent to the 800 block of South Ohio Street in reference to an armed disturbance and when they arrived, Charles said he he saw his truck in the back yard of a house and when he stopped to check, Barnes came out of the house and an altercation ensued between the two.

Oswalt said in the affidavit that Barnes told police Charles had gone into the back yard of the house and cut the tires on the truck, then threatened her with a knife.

Charles then allegedly drove the truck, with its tires flat, across the street, which is where police located it. A knife was found in the console of the vehicle.

Reed said Barnes had no prior convictions or pending charges but said Charles had numerous prior arrests in Nevada.

Because of those prior arrests, Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $25,000 bond for Charles after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with aggravated assault on a family or household member and with terroristic threatening.

A $2,500 bond was set for Barnes on the same charges.

Both Barnes and Charles said they would hire their own attorneys.
