Man accused of carjacking denied knowing child was in car

A Pine Bluff man who was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly stole a car with a child inside from a daycare center told police he did not know the child was in the car.

Marvin Reeves, 42, allegedly told Pine Bluff Police Department Detective Scott Norton that he was looking for a ride to the east side of town, and when no one would give him one, took the car belonging to Caterrica Brown, who had dropped her daughter off at the daycare at West 2nd Avenue and Olive Street.

Norton said in the affidavit that Reeves told him when he saw the child, he pulled over on the east side of town, told the child to get out, then went to an unknown location to change clothes. Reeves also allegedly said he “started to worry about the child,” so he drove to the Broadmoor Arms Apartments, where he parked the car and went to look for the child on foot.

According to the police report, Brown said Reeves jumped in her vehicle and she grabbed the driver’s side door and was dragged for a short distance before she finally let go because of injuries to her arm.

The child was located in the area of East 7th Avenue and Nebraska Street. A witness who saw Reeves park the car followed him on foot, believing that the car may have been stolen, and called 911 to report what Reeves was wearing and his direction of travel. Reeves was arrested by officers in the area.

Also according to the affidavit, Reeves initially told Norton he did not know why he had been arrested and did not take a car or a child, but after he had been taken to the adult detention center and handcuffed to a bench, Reeves allegedly told Norton, “I have something to tell you.”

He also agreed to show Norton where Brown’s purse and the keys to her car were. He pointed out a building at 10th Avenue and Wisconsin Street, where police found the keys and purse.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $150,000 bond for Reeves after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with kidnapping, robbery and second-degree battery.

Reeves was ordered to have no contact with Brown until the case is settled.
