The application deadline for the Learning Institute and Opportunities for New Students program has been extended to Monday, May 16, at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The L.I.O.N.S. program, which is in session from Tuesday, July 5, to Friday, Aug. 5, prepares new admitted UAPB freshmen for college academics.
With 400 spaces available, students may be eligible to receive a scholarship for tuition, room and meals. A book award of up to $500 for the second summer session may also be available to enrolled students.
Benefits of attending the L.I.O.N.S. program include completion of six credits of English and algebra, academic tutoring and enrichment sessions for English and algebra courses, college knowledge workshops and seminars to ensure a successful transition to college life, on-campus housing, meeting other new freshman and UAPB faculty and staff and developing supportive relationships and lasting new friendships.
“L.I.O.N.S. participants benefit greatly because they can complete their foundation courses during the program, and their experiences contribute to a more academically prepared, socially mature and knowledgeable first-year student,” said Carolyn Mills, L.I.O.N.S. program director.

“As a result of this intense college preparatory program, L.I.O.N.S. are retained at a greater rate and graduate in fewer semesters than non-participating UAPB students.”
Applications to the L.I.O.N.S. Program are available at www.uapb.edu/lionsprogram and should be accompanied by admission to UAPB, campus housing and a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the summer session of the 2015-2016 academic year.
L.I.O.N.S. is sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Post-secondary Education, Strengthening Institutions, Title III, Part B, Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program.
