Lady Lions struggle at TCU

Two Texas Christian University players tallied triple-doubles on Tuesday as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team struggled against a top-10 opponent.

UAPB never led in a 109-54 loss at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

No. 9 TCU guard Olivia Miles scored 25 points, a game-high, while collecting 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Graduate student forward Marta Suarez finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Three other Horned Frogs scored in double figures.

UAPB (3-6) shot 36.5% from the field against the nation’s top-ranked defense. Junior guard Indiya Bowen led with 18 points, while junior Jailah Pelly scored 17 and sophomore Jayla Cornelius finished with a season-high 13. Just two other Lady Lions scored, and they finished with a combined six points.

TCU (12-0) scored the first eight points and outscored UAPB 27-5 in the first quarter. The Lady Lions made 2 of 14 shots, one of them a three-pointer, in that frame.

UAPB’s offense picked up afterward, scoring at least 14 points in each subsequent period, but TCU never scored fewer than 24 points in any quarter. The Horned Frogs scored 33 points in the third.

The Horned Frogs shot 63.1% from the field, made 8 of 18 shots from three-point range and made 19 of 24 free throws while outrebounding UAPB 52-18. TCU scored 18 points from 13 offensive rebounds.

One bright spot for UAPB came in the form of a season-low 11 turnovers. The Lady Lions hadn’t committed fewer than 17 in a game this season and turned the ball over 31 times in their last game against Arkansas Baptist. Their season-high was 35 against Sam Houston State.

This was the final of two games against Power Four opponents for UAPB this season.
