Jaguars erase big Golden Lions lead

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team had a 7-0 lead after four innings against Southern on Sunday, but the Golden Lions could not hold on to the big lead and remained in last place in the SWAC West Division with a 13-7 loss to the Jaguars.

Southern (14-13, 6-6 SWAC) scored all 13 runs in the final three innings, and only six of the runs were unearned as UAPB (4-23-1, 3-9) committed five errors in the game.

Watson Chapel graduate Michael Newby started the game and went 6 2/3 innings. He only gave up one hit, but walked five and struck out four batters. He gave up three runs, but only one was earned.

Vince Newton relieved Newby, but he did not record an out. He gave up three runs, but none of the runs were earned. He also allowed two hits and walked a batter.

Stanten Jones took the loss as he went one-third of an inning and gave up four runs — three earned — on three hits.

Brett Schweiger, who started the second game on Saturday, pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up three runs — two earned — on one hits and one walk and struck out one.

Third baseman Cody DeMera was the last one to come on to pitch for the Lions as he went the last third of an inning.

Tyler Hill was 3 for 5 at the plate with three RBIs for UAPB.
