Investigation into burglary results in two arrests

A reported burglary at an auto shop Oct. 27 resulted in the arrest of two men after items taken in the burglary were recovered.

Darrius Henderson, 22, and Zavion Fox, 20, were arrested Friday following an investigation that began when police were sent to Steve’s Speed Shop at No. 1 Portia Drive at 10:27 a.m.

The owner of the business, Steve Kelly, reported that he found one of the bay doors open and the glass broken in the door to the office, Pine Bluff Police Department Detective Mike Sweeney said in a probable cause affidavit presented in Jefferson County District Court Monday.

According to the affidavit, items reported missing included a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu valued at $3,000; a four-wheeler valued at $17,000; chrome wheels valued at $2,000; an adult go-cart valued at $5,000 and three 15-inch subwoofers valued at $1,000.

Sweeney reported that on Friday, he received information that the go-cart in the Bryant Street area the night before driven by Henderson and that Henderson lived in a trailer at Moreland and Bullock Streets. The information also indicated that the roll bar had been taken off the go-cart and said Fox was trying to sell tires, rims and a four-wheeler.

When Sweeney went to the area, he saw a roll cage in a yard in the 5500 block of Bullock Street and saw Henderson move the roll cage into a building.

After learning that there was an active warrant for Henderson’s arrest, Sweeney took him into custody. When he asked Henderson why he had moved the roll-cage, Henderson allegedly said he was “cleaning up his yard.”

Henderson also claimed that the roll cage “had been there a while.”

The owner of the go-cart was contacted and drove by the residence, where he confirmed that the roll cage belonged to him. The owner found the go-cart in a wooded area nearby after Henderson’s wife gave consent to search the property.

Sweeney reported that after Fox was arrested, he allegedly admitted breaking into the business and taking the four-wheeler, four tires and rims, and said he wrecked the four-wheeler in the area of West 12th Avenue and Birch Street.

On Sunday, the four-wheeler was recovered in the area of West 13th Avenue and Myrtle Street and returned to the owner.

On Monday, Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $10,000 bond for Henderson after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with theft by receiving.

A $50,000 bond was set for Fox, who has pending charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated residential burglary, theft of property and aggravated assault stemming from 2015 cases.

The Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent Henderson and Fox.
