The city treasurer is probably one of the least known positions in all of municipal government. But it’s also one of the most important. The treasurer is responsible for making sure money is available to pay bills, etc. He oversees the government spending in the city, making sure that the money spent is according to plan. The city treasurer also ensures proper collection of taxes in the city, which is very important, as this is the main source of funds for local projects.
We have known Greg Gustek, our current treasurer, for many years. He is a fine man who does a fine job. Our thinking is, why change what’s not broken? In fact, a recent Arkansas Legislative Audit found Gustek’s office to be run efficiently and without one problem. Not one single problem. That’s impressive.
We have also known Gustek’s opponent, Lloyd Franklin Jr., for a long time as well. He is an upstanding gentleman who serves on the Jefferson County Quorum Court, where he has done a fine job. It’s nothing against Franklin, we just feel like Gustek should continue in the role of city treasurer. His record speaks for itself.
