Grace Willing Workers learn disaster preparedness

Patsy Brown presented Preparing for Emergencies for You and Your Family recently at the Grace Willing Workers Extension Homemakers meeting at Centennial Fellowship Church in White Hall.

Brown said that disasters can happen at any time and anywhere. Depending upon the severity of the disaster, help in the form of officials and relief workers could take days to arrive. For that reason, it is important that families prepare to cope with emergencies until help arrives.

Families cope better with a disaster supply kit. An emergency checklist should be created and supplies gathered in accordance with the list. Items should be stored in a big container in a convenient place known to all family members.

A smaller version of the disaster supply kit should be kept in the trunk of the car, Brown said. Water is to be stored in plastic containers with enough so that each person in a household has at least a thre-day supply. Likewise, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food should also be stored. The food should require no refrigeration, no preparation and little or no water.

Brown said that another essential step is the creation of a first-aid kit for the home and one for each car. Remember family members with special needs, such as infants and elderly or disabled persons.

Brown said that it is also important to have emergency contact numbers in your phone.

Community service project Chairwoman Nancy Rosen thanked Dianna Winfree for creating beautiful handmade cards to circulate for the Remembering Our Senior Citizens project.

Connie Herrin instructed the Grace Willing Workers in a painted wine glass workshop. Those attending were Debbie James, Linda Works, Dixie Fritz, Carolyn Harness, Nancy Rosen, Lynda Toler, Margaret Thomas, Patsy Brown and Brenda Robinson.

Upcoming events include a wreath workshop for Grace, a county basket weaving workshop, a county fellowship tour to a Southern Living Showcase Home and the Arkansas Extension Homemakers State Meeting in Hot Springs.
