Ft. Smith man accused of damaging coolers at grocery store

A Ft. Smith man was arrested Monday after he allegedly damaged coolers at Food Wise on West 28th Avenue

Awais Amin, 28, who was employed by a contractor doing work at the store, allegedly took a knife and cut gaskets on coolers in the store, Pine Bluff Police Department Detective Michael Merritt said in a probable cause affidavit presented in district court Thursday.

Prosecuting Attorney S. Kyle Hunter said the store had video showing Amin damaging the coolers, which caused an estimated $6,877 in damage.

Amin allegedly told police he was required to sell 40 gaskets and eight freezer skirts a week, and by damaging the coolers, he would be able to make his quota.

The company that Amin worked for would have been the one to replace the gaskets, Merritt said in the affidavit.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $5,000 bond for Amin after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with criminal mischief.

Amin said he would hire his own attorney.
