Expressing concern for our community

Editor, The Commercial:

Again, I was surprised by the choice the directors of CASA have made to represent their agency’s latest fundraiser.

I still know there is a connection between alcohol use and domestic violence. I know that alcohol or other drug use is not the only factor in domestic violence, but it is certainly a large contributing factor.

It is hard to think that this agency cannot plan a fundraiser that does not involve the use of alcohol. Our society and community has so many problems in which alcohol and other drugs contribute. It just seems inconceivable to me that such substances are used to promote any community service agency. I would love to see this agency find a more community friendly way to raise money.

I had decided not to send this letter, but in the April 13 edition of the Pine Bluff Commercial, I read of two arrests for domestic battery. Both of these arrests were said by the victims to have been drinking. Yes, these acts may have happened had alcohol not been used, but the fact is, alcohol was involved. Please stop trying to convince yourselves and others that alcohol and other drugs do not contribute to all forms of violence, including domestic.

Alcohol changes people. It releases us from inhibitions that help us control our thoughts and actions, so we don’t worry about consequences. Many good people do bad things under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.

I offer this letter out of concern for our community and pray God’s blessings and protection on us.
