A former University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball star was selected in Monday night’s WNBA Draft.
Alabama guard Zaay Green, who played at UAPB from 2021-24, was selected in the third round, 32nd overall, by the Washington Mystics.
Green graduated from UAPB in 2024 before transferring to Alabama for her final collegiate season. As a Lady Lion, she scored a combined 1,278 points with 408 assists while collecting 533 rebounds and 176 steals. She achieved six triple-doubles and 28 double-doubles while in Pine Bluff.
One of UAPB’s best seasons ever came in Green’s last year with the program. She scored a team-high 21 points with nine rebounds in the Lady Lions’ historic win at Arkansas and went on to lead UAPB to a SWAC semifinals appearance. That UAPB team was the first to finish with an overall winning record, 17-16, at the Division I level.
She scored 12.9 points per game with 5.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this past season with the Crimson Tide. Green’s Alabama team finished 24-9 with a 10-6 SEC record and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, defeating Green Bay 81-67 before falling 111-108 in double overtime to Maryland. She scored 22 points against Green Bay.
Her stint at Alabama was not her first in the SEC. The Duncanville, Texas, native began her career at Tennessee. After two years as a Lady Volunteer, she transferred to Texas A&M for one season before arriving in Pine Bluff. Her second year at Tennessee and her second year at UAPB were both shortened by injuries.
Green is the first former Lady Lion to be selected in the WNBA Draft.
