Mrs. Evra J. Smith Murphy, 88, of Pine Bluff passed Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She was born July 17, 1927 in Hayti, MO, the youngest daughter of Annie and Thomas Smith.
Over the course of her life, she worked as a cosmetologist, a nurse, a social worker and retired from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff as an associate professor of sociology. She was always committed to improving herself and demanded the best from her children and her students. She was an uncompromising advocate for social justice and dedicated herself to community service and activism.
She was a member of the Northside Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
She is survived by her younger brother, Dr. Robert Smith; her children, Jerry Murphy, David Murphy, Yvonne Murphy, Margaret Murphy-Webb, and Theeda Murphy and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Her graveside service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at Evergreen Cemetery- Hayti, Mo. by Vewiser Dixon, Jr. by Brown Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Sunday, 2-5 p.m., at Brown Funeral Home.
