URA board calls meeting

Pine Bluff Urban Renewal Agency will hold a special called board meeting at 12:15 p.m. Monday in the URA board room, 417 W. Sixth Ave. Details: (870) 209-0323.

Thornton plans festival, BBQ cookoff

The city of Thornton and Thornton Step-By-Step Inc. will sponsor the annual Fall Festival and Hot Lips BBQ Cookoff on Oct. 19. There is no fee to attend, but they ask people to bring their own lawn chairs.

The fall festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Roy Yarbrough City Park on U.S. 79B in Thornton, across from Greater St. Mark AME Church.

The Hot Lips BBQ Cookoff will take place across the street from the park near the fire sub-station and extending over onto the campus of the Greater St. Mark.

The gathering will include live music by “William Young and Friends,” who will be playing from 1-4 p.m. along with other fun-filled events and games. There will also be booths on display.

The theme is, “Thornton Fall Fest: Turning Over a New Leaf and Promoting Unity in Our Community.”

This event is designed to promote the legacy and heritage of the city along with capitalizing on future growth and expansion, according to a news release.

Step-By-Step Inc. is an organization that focuses on community improvement and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Grand Prairie to present arts awards

The Grand Prairie Arts Council will hold a reception at the Arts Center of the Grand Prairie in Stuttgart from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday to recognize the participants in the Visual Arts Category.

The reception is open to the public. Awards will be presented at the event, according to a news release.

This year’s entries include artists from around the state and represent a diverse selection of art mediums. Honorees include:

UCA locals join Greek organizations

More than 370 students were initiated into Panhellenic or Interfraternity Council organizations during the fall 2024 semester. UCA has a total of 19 Greek chapters on campus, according to a news release.
