United Way plans peanut butter drive

The United Way of Southeast Arkansas and the UW Helping Hands volunteers are gearing up to have a Peanut Butter Drive July 1-Aug. 15.

The goal is to provide nutritious snacks during summer break, especially for children who rely on school meals and may face food insecurity during summer break.

United Way asks that donors drop off jars of peanut butter to the United Way office in the Donald W. Reynolds Community Services Center, 211 W. Third Ave., Suite 135.

The agency can also except monetary donations so that cases of peanut butter can be purchased through the Arkansas Food Bank. The donations will be split among the food pantries in Jefferson County, according to a news release. Details: (870) 534-2153 or 534-2156.

USACE: Be water safe July 4th

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, urges everyone to prioritize water safety while enjoying the region’s lakes and rivers.

“As we celebrate our independence, it’s important to remember that safety comes first. By taking a few simple precautions, we can ensure that our time at the lake or river is enjoyable and accident-free,” said Col. Damon Knarr, Little Rock District Commander. “Let’s make this 4th of July memorable for all the right reasons.”

Expect more boats and swimmers on the water and maintain a safe speed and be vigilant for swimmers if you are boating. Remember to always wear your life jacket when on or near water, don’t drink alcoholic beverages and operate a boat, never swim alone and stick to designated swim areas.

Waste Management to close for July 4

Waste Management customers scheduled for pickup July 4 and July 5 will be serviced one day late due to the Fourth of July holiday.

This delay will affect Little Rock, North Little Rock and Sherwood recycling customers as well as all customers in Jefferson County and Pulaski County unincorporated areas, and customers in Pine Bluff and White Hall, according to a news release.

“We hope everyone has a safe and fun Fourth of July,” said Jamie Vernon, public sector manager for WM. “While the holiday is often celebrated with cookouts and fireworks, WM asks residents to ensure that no hot fireworks or coals are placed in their carts. WM encourages (customers) to soak both items in water and wait at least 48 hours before disposing in their solid waste cart.”
