CLUB NEWS: Author, editor Rex Nelson honored at DAR luncheon

The Pine Bluff-John McAlmont Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a luncheon in honor of Rex Nelson, author and senior editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, for his work on recording and preserving Arkansas history.

The meeting was May 20 at Lakeside United Methodist Church Center in Pine Bluff, according to a news release.

Nelson was also the guest speaker and was introduced by Sharon Wyatt. His program, “Arkansas History — Pine Bluff and Southeast Arkansas,” was enjoyed by DAR members and their guests, according to the release.

After the luncheon and program, the regular meeting was held. Regent Susan Over led the group in the DAR rituals. Dr. Darrell Over, president of the state Sons of the American Revolution and the local Bayou Bartholomew chapter was introduced by Susan Over.

National DAR Certificates of Service were presented to DeeLois Lawrence, 15 years; Joannye Crabb, 15 years; Sheila Mitchell, 35 years; and Merry Tom Dorris, 45 years.

The new slate of officers was installed by honorary state Regent Jerrie Townsend as follows: Regent Susan Over, Vice Regent Sabrina Theriac, Secretary Sharon Wyatt, Treasurer DeeLois Lawrence, Chaplain Merry Tom Dorris, Registrar Barrie Hardin, Historian Janet Scherm and Librarian Kathy Tynes.

Over thanked Linda McNulty and Barrie Hardin for organizing the luncheon and the hostesses who provided homemade desserts.

Afterward, Over adjourned the meeting.
