Editor, The Commercial:
I’d like to commend the efforts of all involved in planning the recent city meetings to curtail violence in our communities. I’d also like to thank those who took the time out of their schedules to attend the meetings. But I’d like to ask all parties involved to consider meeting on a monthly basis and rather than trying to set up new meeting times, let’s use the neighborhood watch meetings dates that have been already set up throughout the city from one side to the other.
The neighborhood watch meeting dates have been set up so that residents can attend meetings in their area as well as other areas. Let’s use these monthly meetings to come together as one and voice our concerns and come up with ideas to make our city a safer and better place in which to live. And until we can come together in a united effort. we will make no progress, I don’t care how often we meet. I saw citizens at these meetings that I’d never seen at our monthly neighborhood watch meeting. None of us are “too good”, or live in “too safe” an area not to attend neighborhood watch meetings. Watch meetings are just citizens coming together to make a difference and I think that’s what these community meetings on violence should represent also.
So instead of trying to set up new dates for more meetings, let’s come together and use the dates that have already been set. And all elected officials and clergy are invited to neighborhood watch meetings; we will overlook the fact that you may not have attended a meeting in the past. And if you are in the habit of attending watch meetings, we look forward to seeing you again.
