MONTICELLO — Arkansas-Monticello shot 32 percent from the floor and never led Saturday in a 65-53 defeat Arkansas-Fort Smith to wrap up the Dr. Mary Jane Gilbert Classic.
UAFS (5-3) led by as many as 17 points after having a 36-26 advantage at halftime. The Lady Lions outscored the Cotton Blossoms 28-18 in the paint and held a 44-29 rebounding advantage to win.
Catherine Puckett scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead UAM. She was named to the All-Classic Team, along with UAFS’s Whitney Lee (18 points) and Tashley Gaines, Southern Arkansas’ Shanece Black and Northeastern State’s Katy Harsen. Lee was named the Classic MVP.
Last-second free throws put Lions over Weevils
FORT SMITH — A pair of free throws after a last-second foul against Arkansas-Monticello gave Arkansas-Fort Smith a 74-72 victory Saturday in the Lions’ Classic.

L.A. Farmer made two free throws with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 72 for UAM (6-2). It was the sixth tie in a game that also had seven lead changes.
UAFS (6-3) overcame a 9-3 deficit to lead 41-32 at halftime, but the Boll Weevils regained the lead at 47-45 with 14:25 remaining. UAM was down 72-68 until a Kori Forge jumper with 1:04 left and Farmer’s tying free throws.
Farmer finished with 20 points and four rebounds, and Forge had 18 points, three boards and three steals. Sergio Crowe and Ricardo Hall poured in 13 and 11 points, respectively, for UAM.
