Arrest made in sheriff fakery
Torrence Rogers

The Jefferson County sheriff’s office Criminal Investigation Division arrested a man who pretended to be a sheriff’s office employee and confiscated a resident’s weapon, according to a news release.

On Aug. 11, investigators arrested Torrence Rogers, 51, on probable cause for the violation of criminal impersonation in the first degree, as well as other charges.

On Aug. 7, investigators with the sheriff’s office’s CID began an investigation into reports of a male contacting a citizen while they were walking, identifying themselves as an employee with the sheriff’s office, and subsequently taking a firearm from the citizen, claiming the magazine in the weapon was illegal to possess.

Investigators arrested Rogers as well as conducted a search of Rogers’ residence, seizing numerous items believed relevant to the investigation. Because of the items seized, it is the CID’s belief that Rogers may have committed this offense on other occasions.

Investigators are seeking the public’s help in possibly identifying other victims of this crime. If you have been approached by Rogers and surrendered any property to him on the belief that he was a law enforcement officer, the sheriff’s office is encouraging you to contact Investigator Kirsten Pennington at the office (870) 541-5351 or non-emergency dispatch (870) 541-5300. Pennington can also be reached by email at kpennington@jeffersoncountysheriffar.gov.
