Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority goes red for a day

It’s been a long tradition for the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., to wear the colors pink and green. Friday is National Wear Red Day and AKA will join millions of Americans in the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red.

Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of one in three women each year. This is especially important for African-American women, who are at increased risk due to factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is asking the community to join in as “Pink Goes Red” for a day.

Ways to get involved on National Wear Red Day or any day throughout the year include:

• Wear the red dress pin; receive one free when you sign up at GoRedForWomen.org.

• Organize a women and heart disease educational event such as a health fair or Wear Red Day challenge at your workplace, school or local organization.

• Organize an event at your church using the Have Faith in Heart toolkit. Create a fundraising page at GoRedForWomen.org/WearRedDay.

• Get local buildings and landmarks to Go Red.

• Get co-workers, friends and family involved. Visit GoRedForWomen.org/WearRedDay to download the Wear Red Day Planning Guide.
