Three Pine Bluff area seniors recently won awards in the “Because History Matters” scholarship program, sponsored by Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods.
Winners are Najallah Johnson and Kadazha Barnes, both from Watson Chapel High School, and Nyjha Bates of Ridgway Christian High School.
Each will receive a $3,000 scholarship for their original essays on Katherine Johnson, Michelle Obama and Almer E. Lee, respectively. Each had to describe these individuals’ impact on history and on themselves personally, according to a news release.
Graduating high school seniors in Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods’ market areas with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher were eligible to apply. More than $25,000 in scholarships were awarded to students in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
