Cane Creek Lake closed Feb. 10-12
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will close all access to Cane Creek Lake in Lincoln County Feb. 10-12 to complete nuisance animal removals. Nutria, exotic mammals similar to muskrats and beavers, have grown to levels during the last few years that could cause issues with the lake infrastructure and aquatic habitat, according to a news release. Cane Creek Lake is part of Cane Creek Lake State Park east of Star City and accessed by Cane Creek Road off U.S. 425.

Black Caucus awards include judge
The Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus will recognize nine recipients for their outstanding contributions to their communities. They will be honored during the annual King Kennedy Awards Feb. 15 at the Venue at Westwind in North Little Rock beginning with a pre-awards reception at 5:30 p.m. and a dinner and program at 6:30 p.m. The Dr. Jerry Jewel Government Leadership Award will be presented to Arkansas Court of Appeals Judge Waymond Brown of Pine Bluff. He is the longest serving African American appellate judge in the state, now serving his third term, according to Stuff in The Bluff.com. This award is given to an individual or organization who has provided leadership in the political and legislative arena for people of color and people of poverty, according to the news release. USDA/1890 scholars applications open
The application deadline for the U.S. Department of Agriculture/1890 National Scholars Program is March 1, said Obadiah Njue, interim dean for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences. The program awards scholarships to students attending one of 19 historically black land-grant universities. High school seniors entering their freshman year of college and rising college sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply. Scholars receive full tuition towards a bachelor’s degree, books and the cost of room and board, Njue said. During the summer months, the students will receive an internship with a USDA agency. Entergy Arkansas customers who need help paying their winter utility bills can apply for up to $475 in assistance through the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program’s regular assistance application period runs through the end of March, officials said, or until funds are expended while crisis assistance applications will be accepted through April 30.
