Reported armed disturbance leads to arrest

A report of shots fired at a house on Highway 104 early Friday morning resulted in the arrest of a man who allegedly fired the shots at his former wife and her son.

Because of prior convictions, Jon Hampton, 42, will have to post a $75,000 cash-only bond to be released from the county detention center while prosecutors prepare felony charges against him.

Sheriff’s Investigator Randy Jackson reported that deputies were sent to the house in the 1600 block of Highway 104 at 1 a.m. The victim reportedly said Hampton had come to her house and knocked on the window of her son’s bedroom.

Jackson reported that the son went outside and got involved in a fight with Hampton, and Hampton allegedly ran across the street to another house where he had reportedly been staying, and two shots were allegedly fired at the woman and her son while they were standing in the yard of the residence.

A short time later, Hampton reportedly called 9-1-1 and said he had been shot and was at a house in the 1300 block of Highway 104, Jackson said in his report. Deputies found Hampton hiding in the woods and took him into custody.

Jackson reported that the son punched Hampton in the face during the fight, and Hampton reportedly pulled out a knife and chased the man around the yard before running across the street.

The owner of the house where Hampton ran told deputies Hampton had his 12-gauge shotgun, and Jackson reported that 12-gauge shell casings were found in the yard, but no gun was recovered.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth ruled prosecutors had probable cause to charge Hampton with two counts of aggravated assault, and with being a felon in possession of a firearm because of prior convictions.

Hampton was also ordered to have no contact with either of the alleged victims until the case is settled.
