The Epsilon Zeta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. will observe its 97th Founders’ Day starting with weekend activities.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, Zeta Phi Beta will host an event at Whispering Knoll Assisted Living, 6812 S. Hazel St.
At 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, worship services will be held at Bethany Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 1923 S. Olive St., followed by lunch at Harbor Oaks Restaurant, 1 Harbor Oaks Drive.
Monday, Jan. 16, locals will participate in Zeta Phi Beta’s Global Day of Service.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was organized at Howard University at Washington, D.C., Jan. 16, 1920, as a result of encouragement given to the five founders by members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., a spokeswoman said in a news release.

“It was the idea of the founders that the sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority-minded and desired to follow the ideas of finer womanhood, scholarship, service, and sisterhood. More than 800 collegiate and graduate chapters are divided into nine regions in North America, Europe, Asia, The Caribbean Africa and the Middle East,” the spokeswoman said.
Affiliations of Zeta Phi Beta include the Amicae Auxiliary, (Friends of Zeta), Archonette Club, Amicettes and Pearlettes, the youth organizations of the sorority.
The international president of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. is Mary Breaux Wright. Marian S. Evans is the chapter president. The founders’ day committee is co-chaired by Mattie Glover and LaTosha Simmons.
