Winter wheat production forecast down 6%, report says

Winter wheat production in 2012 for Arkansas is forecast at 25.3 million bushels, down 1.58 million bushels from the June 1 forecast and down 4.86 million bushels from last year, officials said.

The figures were reported in the Arkansas Crop Production Report issued July 11 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Based on July 1 conditions, yield is expected to average 55 bushels per acre, 3 bushels per acre less than last year. The area for harvest, at 460,000 acres, is down 60,000 acres from 2011.

United States winter wheat production is forecast at 1.67 billion bushels. This is down 1 percent from last month but up 12 percent from 2011. The U.S. yield is forecast at 47.7 bushels per acre, up 0.4 bushel from last month’s forecast. Grain area for harvest totals 35 million acres, up 8 percent from 2011.
