Willing Workers of White Hall Extension Homemakers Club met May 28 at White Hall Library. Several members arrived early to stuff and complete dolls for Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Sarah Payton had cut out and sewed 15 dolls and brought them for members to finish. Members Tonia Dalby, Penny Scholes, Jo Ann Carr, Karen and Jay Needler, Marnette Reed and Dee Kindrick helped complete this project, according to a news release.
President Karen Needler welcomed everyone and members had ham and cheese croissants, Frito corn salad, vegetable salad and cake, provided by Reed and Scholes. Vice President Kindrick led members in the Homemaker’s Creed.
Jay Needler read the Thought: No worse for you … and better for the planet. Dalby read the Handy Hint: Check the label to see if you can thaw that frozen package in the fridge (so it cooks faster) or toss uncooked leftovers in the freezer. Jim Wilson read the inspiration from Genesis 2:15.
Secretary Jo Ann Carr called the roll with members answering the question: Have you ever eaten a veggie burger?
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Carr presented the program on “Guide to Plant-Based Protein.” She asked if anyone had ever been on a plant-based diet or had thought about going on one. She said to start small by making one meal per week a plant-based meal. She said Walmart has some plant-based foods. Carr brought some plant-based peanut butter cups, a plant-based Hershey bar and black bean chips for members to try.
She went over how much protein you need a day and passed out a handout with the benefits of consuming plant-based protein, a list of protein-powered plant foods and a recipe for sweet potato black bean burgers.
Karen Needler reported on community service projects and reminded members to bring items for the backpack program to the June meeting along with cereal for the White Hall Food Pantry. Peanut butter and other items were collected at the meeting for the White Hall pantry. Some snack items were collected for the county project to fill baskets or boxes for first responders and others at the next county board meeting.
Kathy Wilson, continuing education chairman, reported they had a good trip to the Stuttgart Agricultural Museum last month and encouraged those who could not attend to go another time.
She has a craft workshop scheduled for the club at White Hall Library from noon to 5 p.m. Friday. If anyone is interested in coming, contact any member of the club.
