Why the change?

Editor, The Commercial:

I wonder what the athletic administration at Pine Bluff High School has against the school’s traditional colors — red and white?

I attended a track meet in Hot Springs yesterday to watch my granddaughter’s Sheridan High team, but I have a historic interest in the Zebras too, graduating at PBHS in 1952 as a member of the state champion basketball team.

Looking down yesterday at the various colors of the uniforms, I was unaware that Pine Bluff High School was represented until I read the name on the electronic scoreboard, because the Zebras were wearing black, as were several other schools.

If the administration is trying to prove something by shunning the proud and beautiful red and white of years past, just exactly what is it? Everybody knows that things are different now, from days of long ago and that new “chiefs” are in charge, but I believe that all of the young athletes would get a shot of pride by running onto the field or arena wearing the red and white stripes. It’s a proud tradition.

Jack Mayberry,
