Editor, The Commercial:
Bravo! Bravo! Again, our local newspaper is masterful in its editorial section. Let me quote from the editorial of December 20th — “The present administration has run the ship of state fully aground. Yet, they’re on the verge of voting themselves a prize for navigation.” It is almost election time once again and our beloved mayor and some of our city council members are attempting to spend money like a drunken sailor (apologies to all of you drunken sailors out there). Could this perhaps be a plot to gain voters? This money is not theirs to spend. The voters of Pine Bluff voted to distribute part of the 5/8 cent tax money to firemen and policemen, not evey employee of the city of Pine Bluff.
Also, while I’m on the subject, why do we have to have personal attacks during the city council meetings? Mr. Mays is right when it comes to the “perception” about Pine Bluff. Most all of the articles about Pine Bluff that appear in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and on the local news channels are negative.
If you don’t subscribe to the Pine Bluff Commercial, you are doing yourself a disservice. All of the citizens of Pine Bluff need to know what is going on in Pine Bluff. Call your city council member and voice your concerns. Vote intelligently. Know the issues. Know the candidates and for what they stand. Know how your council member votes and when they don’t vote at all. The last sentence of the above-referenced editorial ends with these words “The people of this city deserve better.” Instead of whining about how bad things are here in Pine Bluff, get proactive. I think we deserve better, too.
