Watson Chapel school board passes zone resolution

The Watson Chapel School Board voted to approve a resolution Monday evening for the superintendent to file the district’s school board zone redistricting plan and map with the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office.

“When we adopted the zone plan in February it was necessary to pass a resolution and the one step we did not do was approve the resolution,” Superintendent Danny Hazelwood told the board at a special called meeting Monday night.

At a Feb. 13 board meeting, Hazelwood offered up several school board zone redistricting options for a vote.

The zone adjustment options were prepared by EFS GeoTechnologies of Monticello as part of the decennial requirement to ensure the adequate representation of minority groups by accounting for population shifts documented by the 2010 U.S. Census.

The zone plan approved by the board modifies the five single member district zones and two at-large zones that are already in place to even out population numbers in each of the five zones.

“The boundaries changed but the board members within the boundaries did not change,” Hazelwood said.

Acting chair and board vice president Sandra Boone called for a motion on the resolution.

“I move that we accept and approve the resolution before us,” board member Robin Barker said, with board member Maxine Nelson providing the second.

Hazelwood said that the two at-large positions are created out of a combination of zones three and five in one case and zones one, two and four in the other.
