Watson Chapel girls blow out Sylvan Hills

SHERWOOD — Watson Chapel held Sylvan Hills to nine points in the second half and went on to win 61-27 Tuesday, setting up a home battle against White Hall for second place in the 5A-Southeast Conference.

Watson Chapel (16-9, 10-2 in 5A-Southeast) had a 13-8 lead after one quarter and a 33-18 halftime lead before pulling away for a 51-25 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Chapel Jones led Watson Chapel with 17 points and Kamera Bozeman scored eight points. Sylvan Hills, which was one game ahead of Little Rock Mills going into Tuesday for the fourth and final state tournament seed from the conference, fell to 8-16 and 6-6.

Star City 68, DeWitt 11

STAR CITY — Star City won another 8-4A Conference championship and extended its winning streak in the league to 60 games Tuesday with a blowout of DeWitt.

Twice Star City (25-1, 13-0 in 8-4A) shut out DeWitt in a quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs led 44-4 at halftime. The Lady Dragons scored four points in the first quarter and seven in the third.

For Star City, Tyeshia Harris scored 17 points, Kashima Williams had 11 and Olydia Thornton netted 10.

DeWitt, now 6-7 in the conference, saw its playoff hopes damaged with one game remaining. The Lady Dragons were tied with McGehee for the fourth and final spot in the 4A South Regional, but fell to fifth thanks in part to McGehee’s victory over Dollarway.

McGehee 47, Dollarway 21

McGEHEE — Led by Raven Burks’ 13 points, the Lady Owls stayed alive for the fourth and final playoff spot and, at 12-8, assured themselves of a winning record for the season. McGehee is also 7-6 in the 8-4A after coming into Tuesday a game behind Hamburg for third.

“We can’t be satisfied,” said Lady Owls coach Karen Broughton, who is in her first season after serving as an assistant coach at Drew Central. “It’s going to be a challenge to beat Star City, but we’re just going to see what we can do.”

Warren 63, Lake Village Lakeside 48

WARREN — The Lady Jacks (7-12, 4-9 in 8-4A) can’t make the regional, but they hope to finish the season on a winning streak.

Strong performances by Chakendra Robinson (19 points), Tyshina Smith (14) and Alex Phillips (13) helped them do that.

8-3A Tournament

Camden Harmony Grove 48, Rison 35

FORDYCE — The fifth-seeded Lady Wildcats finished their season at 4-10 with a 13-point loss to the Lady Hornets.

Kabrina Marshall led Rison with 11 points and Meca Rainey added 10. Harmony Grove advanced to play top-seeded Drew Central at 6:20 p.m. today in the semifinal round.

BOYS

Sylvan Hills 67, Watson Chapel 37

SHERWOOD — Archie Goodwin scored 25 points, and the Bears (21-5, 12-0 in 5A-Southeast) are two victories away from a perfect conference season.

JoviOne Bailey led Watson Chapel (13-12, 6-6) with 15 points. Despite the loss, the Wildcats hung on to third place in the conference, just one game ahead of Monticello, which beat White Hall on Tuesday. The top four in the 5A-Southeast will advance to the state tournament.

Star City 65, DeWitt 31

STAR CITY — The Bulldogs (12-13, 9-4 in 8-4A) sealed a spot in the 4A South Regional tournament by blowing out the fifth-place Dragons (9-16, 4-9). Star City can clinch second place in the conference with a victory over McGehee on Friday night, as the Bulldogs will have swept the Owls for the season.

Lavonte Gardner (14 points) and Landen Burns (12) led Star City in scoring. Donte Hicks guided DeWitt with 16 points.

Dumas 58, Hamburg 45

DUMAS — Dontarius Stovall scored a game-high 21 points to lead Dumas past Hamburg.

Dumas (13-7, 9-4 in 8-4A) also got 13 points from Jarrett Slater and 10 from Tevin Golden.

Lake Village Lakeside 54, Warren 44

WARREN — The Beavers (4-20, 3-10 in 8-4A) scored 13 points in each quarter except the third, when they had 15, and kept the Lumberjacks winless on the season.

VonEric Gonder led Warren (0-19, 0-13) with 16 points.

Warren fans will have something to cheer about today when their junior high Lumberjacks meet McGehee at 5:45 p.m. today for the 8-4A championship in DeWitt. Star City will play McGehee in the girls final at 4:30.

8-3A Tournament

Rison 56, Camden Harmony Grove 46

FORDYCE — The Wildcats (4-14), who went winless in the 8-3A this season, knocked out the Hornets and advanced to play regular-season conference champion Smackover at 7:30 this evening in the semifinals.
