Walk Across Arkansas statewide fitness challenge begins its spring 2017 edition Sunday, Feb. 26. Residents in every county are encouraged to participate, according to Mary Ann Kizer, Jefferson County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent.
The challenge is sponsored by the University of Arkansas Systems Division of Agriculture. Participants can sign up online at http://www.uaex.edu/health-living/health/fitness/walk-across-arkansas.aspx and record the number of minutes they walk or do other exercise for eight weeks.
Walkers are encouraged to form teams of two to 10 people. Team captains can make the reporting weekly for the team. Participants will receive certificates and a participation prize.
“Just by increasing the number of steps taken each day, a person can really improve his or her overall health,” Kizer said in a news release.
She says one of the great things about Walk Across Arkansas is that’s inexpensive. The only equipment someone needs to participate is a clock.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
“And participants are not limited to walking,” Kizer said. “Any kind of physical activity for at least 10 minutes can be recorded in the daily log, including water aerobics, dancing, strength training, gardening and many other activities.”
